Education management is the coordination of all aspects of education including curriculum development, teaching techniques, and the implementation of strategies to manage the educational system. The management of the whole education process involves the collection, analysis, processing, dissemination, maintenance, updating and evaluation of education data. Education management refers generally to the management of an educational system, where a team consists of people with different academic training and expertise to manage, plan, strategy, and implement structures for an effective education system.
Education management in the United States is based on the concept of a pyramid structure, with schools located at the bottom, including public, private, parochial, charter, co-curricular, and special-education schools. These schools are separated by levels of authority, which includes the state, districts, school districts, and local governing boards.
In terms of a school district, the level of authority may include a single teacher (supervisory), a school administration, and a board of education. Within a district, a number of units are organized based on the size of a district, such as physical education, elementary schools, secondary schools, special education, high schools, colleges and universities, vocational schools, adult education, and athletic training.
In some cases, school systems include a number of public elementary, secondary, or special education schools. These include separate elementary, vocational, and secondary schools. In many states, there is also a separate school district for each major religion. In some other jurisdictions, there is a district devoted solely to a particular ethnic group.
School systems often use various management strategies. For example, a district might have a centralized administration, consisting of an office manager, a supervisory team, a payroll clerk, a teacher’s aide, a student services representative, a teacher, and a few other personnel. In many states, the district would also include a board of education that coordinates and controls the operations of the school district. In many states, the board would have a superintendent and a board of education. Other states use a combination of these systems.
As an education professional, I see the education and schooling system as one of the most challenging environments to work in. However, it is also one of the most rewarding for those who understand how to effectively manage the complex systems involved.The education and schooling system involves a number of complicated policies and procedures. These can be difficult to learn and implement, especially for the first-time manager. The problem of course is compounded by the fact that there are a number of school administrators with a variety of skills. Some might prefer to spend more time teaching and others might prefer to spend more time working the levers and knobs.
When it comes to this challenge, however, the best way to learn and grow is to take an individual approach and use both a textbook approach, and a hands-on approach. By practicing the methods that are working for others, you will become familiar with the techniques that are most successful in your situation. Once you have a working knowledge of the methods and techniques that work for the majority of administrators, you can then learn from these methods and begin applying them to your own situations.
